Still working with the family of Dominick KAELIN.

His eldest son:
Joseph Meinrad KAELIN, born 22 September 1897, Philadelphia, PA. - died March 1969, Philadelphia, PA.

NOTE: The Naturalization Papers for Dominick state that he was born 12 September 1897, however, I have found several documents where his birthdate is listed as 22 September 1897. These documents include WWI & WWII Draft Crads as well as the SSDI Index.
NOTE: I also believe that he is the son of Dominick KAELIN and his first wife Annie STEVENS (1871 - 1904). Dominick & Annie were married in 1894.

Joesph Meinrad KAELIN married Veronica STORY (born June 1897) in 1917. They had 5 children:
Virginia M. - born about 1919 in PA.
Joseph        - born about 1921 in PA.
Roland F.    - born 11 January 1923 - died 12 March 1986
Anna M.     - born 10 December 1925 - died 20 December 1992 San Bernadino, CA.

I pieced this info together through various sources found on the Ancestry.com website and also the LDS Family search website.
Using the info I found on the Naturalization Papers for Dominick KAELIN, I ran a search for each child individually. Then I used what information I found and follwed them through the census.
Using that information, I ran a search on the LDS Family search website and found documents supporting the other information. I was able to find a marriage year for Joseph KAELIN & Veronica STORY, as well as the other documents stated above.

Kaelin Update

I have been trying to find some information about my Great-uncle Dominick Kaelin.

Here is what I found:

Dominick KAELIN
born: 11 November 1870 in Einsiedeln, Schwyz, Switzerland

He arrived in the US, along with one of his elder brothers, Joseph Martin KAELIN (my Great-grandfather), about 1888.

I found the Naturalization Record for Dominick. It is dated 12 November 1915. I found this on Ancestry.com.

This document lists his wife as, Maria. She is actually his second wife, and I believe her to actually be Marion FRITSCH (born 17 June 1870 in Germany). They were married 5 October 1905 in Philadelphia.

Dominick KAELIN married his first wife, Annie STEVENS (born 23 May 1871 in Germany - died about May 1904 in Philadelphia) in Philadelphia on 2 June 1894).

The above document lists the children of Dominick & Maria as follows:
Josephine - born 13 August 1896 in Philadelphia, PA.
Joseph     - born 12 September 1897 in Philadelphia, PA.
Charles    - born 17 October 1899 in Philadelphia, PA.
Freddy     - born 7 October 1906 in Philadelphia, PA.
Helen       - born 8 March 1909 in Philadelphia, PA.
Dorothy   - born 5 May 1912 in Philadelphia, PA.

I believe that the first three children listed are actually the children of Dominick KAELIN & Annie STEVENS.

I have tried to trace Dominick & his family through the Census' for Philadelphia. I had found the census' for 1920 & 1930. I used these to successfully verify the names of Dominick's wife & children, as well as his Naturalization.

I have not yet been able to find when Dominick or his wife, Maria/Marion died, nor where they are buried.

Uncort-Anuszkiewicz Update

Finally, I have a copy of my Greatgrandmother, Alice UNCORT's death certificate.

She died in Philadelphia General Hospital on 11 April 1933.
Cause of Death was Chronic Glomerular Nephritis, with Uremic Coma as a contributing factor.
She was buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery on 15 April 1933.

A follow-up phone call to the cemetery revealed the exact location of her grave:

Section 1, Range 1, Lot 14

I am going to try to go to the cemetery to check out her grave and get a photo. I had asked the woman on the phone (at the cemetery) if she knew if there was a headstone on the grave, she said she did nnot think there was. I am going to check it out anyway.

So, where to go from here?

Update...

I went to the Cemetery over the weekend. I have found that G-Grandmom Alice is buried in a grave that is owned by the Cemetery - actually owned by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. As a result, they cannot give me a listing of those who are buried with her. According to the secretary at the Cemetery, this grave is very similar to the graves in the Infant Section of the Cemetery. They are owned by the Archdiocese and the poor are buried here. There are no headstones and the other person or persons buried in the graves are other poor Catholics. They are not family members.

I don't understand why she is not buried with her husband, son, and brother?

New Cousins & An Update

Haven't posted in awhile - not much to tell - No progress.

I have found two new cousins!!!

Found a cousin on Tony's Ritchie side of the family. A cousin Michelle. She is Tony's Aunt Betty's daughter.

I also found a Swiss cousin on my Kaelin Line. Stefan Kalin (Kalin is the original spelling of my Maiden name Kaelin). Stefan lives in Zurich.

Michelle, Stefan & I have become Facebook friends as well.

Update on Uncort:
Not much of an update.
I sent a request to Pennsylvania Vital Records a few weeks ago, asking for a copy of Alice UNCORT (Alexandra SIGMOND ANUSZKIEWICZ) death certificate. Have not heard anything yet, but it has only been about two weeks.
I also called the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to see if they have arecord of burial for her. They do not. The woman I was talking to on the phone checked Holly Cross and Holy Sepullchre. She is not buried in Holy Cross with her husband and son; nor is she buried in Holy Sepulchre.
So I am not sure where to go from here.

Switching Gears . . . Looking For Anuszkiewicz-Uncort

I have decided to switch my game plan up a little and look for my Polish Ancestors - who are proving just as illusive as my Hawaiian Ancestors.

The ANUSZKIEWICZ name was changed to UNCORT after the children went to school. Family story is that the Catholic Church changed the name because the nuns could not pronounce the name.

A Quick Update - Actually A Few Leads

I had been contacted by a cousin named Napua Lucas. She is the granddaughter of David Kahana - Grandpop Dave!!!!!

Napua is the daughter of Josephine Kahana, whose mother is Bertha!! Finally, I have proof that Bertha did exist. I sort of had proof that she existed when I found - or was given - the information about David Longfeather, but now I have been in contact with her Granddaughter!

There really isn't much information. Apparently Napua doesn't know much more than I do. She actually said that I was able to find more information than she actually knows. She did confirm that the family originated from the Big Island of Hawaii, and that some of the Kahana Ohana live in Oahu.

She also confirmed that her mother, Josephine was put in a home during the Depression - I previously found Josephine and her brother, Frank in the 1930 Census, both in Orphanages.
Josephine was in The Catholic Home for Destitute Children,
Frank, in St. John's Male Orphan Asylum

Josephine Kahana, eventually changed her name to Napua.
Josephine's first marriage was to Henry KAMANUWAI, and they had a son, also named Henry.
Henry Jr. died about 2 years ago from prostate cancer.
Josephine remarried, and she had two daughters.
I am not sure if Josephine is still alive, but I do know that her second husband had died about 2 years ago.

Napua also said that the last time she saw or heard from her Aunt Ada (Josephine's sister) that she lived in Hawaii.

She also said that Grandpop Dave had a brother named, Charles. I asked Aunt Diane (one of my Mom's sisters) about this and she said as far as she knew, Grandpop Dave was the oldest of 3 brothers, but the name Charles did not ring a bell.

So, although it is not exactly progress in the true sense of the word, it is more like confirmation-progress.

A Possible Breakthrough on Kahana Research

I am hopeful.........

I was looking through Grandpop Dave's Civil Service Records again. This time I had Tony help me. I was hoping that maybe he could find something I missed, or bring some added suggestions on how to proceed.
First, he/we think that maybe Grandpop lied about his age. We came to this conclusion after looking over these papers - dated between 1942 - 1945. In some of the papers Tony said it appears that whenever Grandpop filled out any papers (always using the 1888 birthyear) that there was some hesitation; meaning that it appeared that he had to really think about what he was doing. When we looked real close we noticed that there was a very slight difference in the last two 8's of the birthyear - some of them even looked like mistakes. In one instance the first of the last two 8's looked like it was originally the number 9 and it was written over to look like an 8. In another instance, the last 8 looked like it was originally a 4.
CONCLUSION: He possibly lied about his age.

We then asked ourselves why. Why would he lied about his age? These papers were for WWII, so he had no need to lie. However, if we went with the assumption that he was actually born in 1894, then he would have been 48 years old - he may have qualified for active duty. However, using the 1888 birthyear, he would have been too old for active duty but old enough for Civil Service - in his case a Merchant Seaman.
Looking further into these papers, he applied to go to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii (Home!). He actually ended up doing his Civil Service in The Naval Aircraft Factory at the Philadelphia Naval Ship Yard. In November 0f 1945, he resigned, stated that he was returning to his old job and that he only joined to go to Pearl Harbor. He had also stated that he was not a Veteran of either war and that he had "had enough".
CONCLUSION: If he lied about his age it was only to get back to Peral Harbor.

Next on my agenda.........
While looking over these papers, I had happened to read over Grandpop's work history. In one of the answers to his work duties, he included the information that has also known as David LONGFE??HER. I could not make out what the letters are.
So......I posted an email to the Hawaii-L list. I got a response from someone who had found a David LONGFEATHER with the birthdate of 26 February 1894! Sound familiar?
Next.....I myself ran a search for David LONGFEATHER on Ancestry.com and I came up with:

WWI Draft Resistration:
David LONGFEATHER
born: 26 February 1894 Honuapo, Kau, Hawaii
He says he is Malayan
He was marrid and had one child
He was living at Palmer & Fillmore Sts in Riverside, NJ
He was a Case Maker at Keystone Watch Case Co in Riverside, NJ
This was dated June 5, 1917

Everything fits Grandpop Dave except the race: Malayan. It also fits with the fact that Grandpop, as David Kahana, also worked at the Keystone Watch Case Co. a year earlier.

Next is 1920 Census for Philadelphia, PA., dated February 7, 1920:
David LONGFEATHER - head of house - age 25 - race, white
born Hawaii, father born Hawaii, mother born Hawaii
Bertha - wife - age 20(? could be 23)
born Penna, father born Penna, mother born Penna
John - son - age 3 years and 8 months
born Penna, father born Hawaii, mother born Penna
Josephine - daughter - age 2 years and 2months
born New Jersey, father born Hawaii, mother born Penna.

This fits with information I have about Grandpop and his first wife and children.

I believe this David LONGFEATHER is actually David KAHANA, but how to prove it? If it is him why the name change? Did he leave Hawaii as David Longfeather? What about entering Philadelphia? Was he Longfeather or Kahana?

Still No Progress

I still have not made any progress wit my Hawaiian side. I am at a complete loss as to what to do next.
I did post an email to the HAWAII-L list again asking for ideas. I recieved an email from someone stating they could help me out and that they may possibly be related - but like everything else with this side of my family - I am still waiting to hear from them.
I think I should put KAHANA 'OHANA aside for now and try another side of the family.

Vital Stats is a Dead End

Well, I called the Hawai'i Dept. of Health. The woman I was talking to said that the 'certified letter' definitely is a letter stating that there is 'NO RECORD' in the Ka'u District for that date - 26 February 1888/1894, for Grandpop Dave.

So where to now?
Maybe I should write to the various Historical Societies in the Islands?
Maybe try the Sugar Plantations?

I think before I do that I need to go over the information I do have very carefully and see if I missed some other clue. There has to be some way of proving that he was born in Hawai'i.

Possible Progress - Aparently Not!

I still have not received the 'certified letter' from Hawaii, although they did cash the check I sent to them on the 20th of June.
I called the Hawaii Department of Health yesterday to see what was going on. It appears that the 'certified letter' may be nothing more than a letter stating there is 'no record' of Grandpop Dave's birth.
I don't understand, why would they tell me there is a certified letter if they had already told me there is no record? Why would the ask me if I wanted it? Why would they tell me to resubmit my request, if they already told me what I needed to know? What is the point?

Did this guy ever exist?

I need to sit back and re-evaluate what info I already have. Maybe I am going about this the wrong way.

Possible Progress ?

I recieved a reply from Hawaii Department of Health in response to my request for a copy of Grandpop Dave's birth certificate.
First there are no records in the Kau District on the Island of Hawaii prior to 1916. However, there seems to be a certified letter of some sort, that I can request. I am hoping this is some sort of verification on Grandpop Dave's birth. I have to resubmit my request, which I am DEFINITELY going to do!!
They also sent me back my check saying that I sent them too much money and that they could not give me a refund - another reason I had to resubmit my request. I don't know why they just didn't send me the certified letter and keep the extra $5.00? It would be more than worth it to me.

Sent For David Kahana's Birth Certificate - Again!

I know I have done this before but I'm thinking that since I now know the names of my Great-grandparents I may (hopefully) have better results. It can't hurt.

How to apply for issuance of certified copie of vital records? ...it will take you to another page. At the bottom of the page are links for pdf files. Just click on the link for the type of record you want and print it out.
You have to send in a copy of your drivers license or other type of identification, as well as, a fee of $10 - I sent in $15 for a certified copy of his birth certificate and letter of verification. You don't need both but with the luck I have been having tracing Grandpop Dave, I figured Why not?

It is as if Grandpop Dave did not exist before he came to the mainland. I am beginning to think that without the full spelling of the name 'KAHANA' I will not be getting much further.

Kalama KAHANA
I have been searching for her. Again not much luck!

I did find a Kalama KAHANA on a 1910 Census for Ka'u District Hawaii. In this census she is the head of the household and a widow. She is about 42 years old with an estimated year of birth as 1862 - definitely old enough to be my Great-grandmother no matter which year Grandpop Dave was born. She was born in Hawaii as was both of her parents, and the color or race is listed as Hawaiian. She is the mother of 20 children with 12 living - Can you believe 20 children! Two of her daughters are living with her:
Makaila, age 9 and Kulia, age 7, and their parents are also Hawaiian
They live at 325 Honu Apo (sp?), I cannot make out the next 2 words, then, above mall(?).

I don't know if it is wishful thinking or if I am just being goofy, but I think there is a good chance that this Kalama may be my Great-grandmother.

There are also several other KAHANA's on this sheet:
Kamohoalii KAHANA, age 13 is living with his brother, Kahoopai WAIAU. There is also a Richard WHITTINGTON who is the son-in-law of Kahoopai; Richard is married to Kalei who is 23. They live at house number 322 Honu Apo (sp?), near the landing.

In house 323, near landing, we have:
Kaapana KAHANA, age 55, his wife Kaaukai age 50, and their grandson Laka KAHOOHANOHANO (sp? could also be KAHOOKAUAKAUA?)
(NOTE: These people may also be ancestors of mine. I was told by 3 different people that Kaapana KAHANA & Kaaukai are Grandpop Dave's family. However, being me, I need documentation)

I received information from Hawaii.
It is very confusing. One of the papers state that:

Kahana (k) & Kalama (w) had a daughter Kekuewa

This paper states that this is the sister of my Grandfather, David Kahana. However, except for the names (Kahana & Kalama) there is no other proof that these are my Kahana relatives. I have nothing that links my Grandfather to these three people. I still have not been able to find a birth certificate for my Grandfather.

Quick Update

I was running a search on the LDS website on just the surname KAHANA and I was surprised to find the following:

Samuel KAHAMOOKALANI KAHANA KAOHIMAUN

this person's father's name was:

John Kahanakamali KAOHIMANU

Interesting

Samuel's surname is the name that I was given by one of my cousins, including the missing last letter. However, if you look at his father's name you will notice that it ends in the letter 'u'. In one of my other posts I had stated that I thought that the last letter was transcribed incorrectly, but looking at this name I see that it could also be missing.

It is a long shot but I think it is a try.

I got the submitter's name and I am going to write to him to see if any of my information sounds familiar to him.

I also am waiting for some info from Hawai'i

Possible Original Name for Kahana

One of the things that I have found is a possible spelling of the original version of the Kahana surname. One of my cousins found it somewhere on one of their trips to Hawai'i.

KAHAMOOKALANIKAHANAKAOHUN

The name is mispelled. All Hawaiian words and syllables end in a vowel. So, this one has either a missing last letter or the last letter has be transcribed incorrectly. Considering the way the name has been given to me with the letter 'n' on the end, chances are that the name ended in a closed letter. So, the letters 'a' and 'o' are possibilities, also the letter 'u' is a possibility because sometimes the letter 'n' can look like the letter 'u'. So here are the possibilities that I can up with:

I remeber seeing the name when I was a child, but unfortunately I do not remember what it was. I do remember that it begun with the letter 'K' and that it was HUGE! It took up almost the entire line and written next to it was "later shortened to Kahana". This little note was written in my Mom's handwritting, and after doing some research family story goes that my Mother knew the name in it's full version. So, it is possible.

Talking to My Cousin & Uncle

I have been in contact with my cousin Michael Kahana. We have been emailing each other for a few weeks now. He doesn't know any more than I do about my family, but it is really nice talking to family members. For whatever reason this side of my family has been estranged for so long and we hold "Cousin Parties" every few years so that we can all get to know each other. I think we are due for one soon.
I have also been in contact with my Uncle Robert. We had a very nice conversation a few weeks ago. He did know a little more about the family than either I or Michael - one of his sons. He had told me that the picture I have posted on this blog of my Mom with another woman is my Aunt Gloria. He also told me that Danny Kalai has been to Hawai'i several times, had lived there for three years and that he may be able to help us out.
Uncle Robert also said that Grandpop Dave had 3 sisters. I need to find out their names. Chances are that they are already deceased, but it may be a way to located family in Hawaii.
Uncle Robert told me that Grandpop Dave was a stow-away on a ship when he was about 10 years old. When he was found they put him to work.

Progress - or Not

Still not progress in the search for Grandpop Dave and his family in Hawaii.

I called the Bureau of Land Conveyances in Hawaii to see if there was any way I could research land records long distance, e.g., through the mail. No, I have to go to Hawaii and search myself or have a family member do it for me, or hire someone. This is a temproary set back.

I emailed the State Archives asking how to proceed in doing long distance research - no response yet. I also email the Hawaiian Historical Society asking the same thing - no response from them either.

I have heard from Mike Kalai. He is the Grandson of Danny Kalai that I mentioned on one of these pages. Mike had read my blog and contacted me. I remember his Dad, also Danny, from when I was a kid - we use to visit the Kalai's, and I remember the kids being: Danny, Denise and Doreen. Mike was talking to his Grandmom and she remembers my family. Mike's Grandfather and Uncle Pete were at my Dad's funeral back in October. So I know they remember the family. Hopefully when I get around to talking to them, they will remember Grandpop Dave and be able to supply some information about his life in Hawaii.

I was also contacted by William Kuamoo, Sr. He was one of the people I wrote to a few weeks ago. He was one of the organizers of the Kahana and Hekekia Family Reunion in 2004. He also believe's that the KAHANA and HEKEKIA families are one. He has a David KAHANA that he is also researching and he believe's it is my Grandfather. I hope so, however, his David's parents names are not the same as I have, so I am not so sure. I emailed him this morning and asked hime how Grandpop Dave fits in and that I did not see the connection. I probably will not hear from him until late tonight or tomorrow - Hawaii is 6 hours behind us here on the East Coast.

I still have 4 other people who I sent letters to that I have not heard from, so...

I was talking to someone at The Office of Hawaiian Affairs - I was checking the status of my Hawaiian Registry Application. On my application I had checked that I needed help verifying my ancestry, and the woman I was talking to - Myrna, was very helpful. Only problem was - everything she had suggested I had already done!

We got to talking about a conversation I had with one of my cousins about the KAHANA family possibly owning land in Hawai'i. She told me that I should check the Bureau of Land Conveyances. So, I am going to write to them and see if they can help.

Another idea she said to try was to write to the Hawaii State Archives. I had told her that I know the name of the ship that Grandpop Dave entered Philadelphia on. She had suggested to try the State Archives to see if he is listed on any of the out-going ships. I emailed the State Archives and asked them if they could point me in the right direction. This way when I write to them I know exactly where or who to address my letter to.

I also emailed The Hawaiian Historical Society asking them if they would have any type of records, such as older Birth Certificates, that may be able to searched.

She had also told me that my next step may be to get oral confirmation.
I was telling her about the other Hawaiian names I am researching and about the KALAI family. I have always been told that they were cousins. Recently I have been told that they are not relatives in the true sense - please do not take offense, I do not know how else to word it. I was told that the are 'cousins' only because they are 'Hawaiian'.
Anyway, I was telling her that there is another Hawaiian family out here. She said that if I could get oral confirmation from one of the Kalai's that Grandpop Dave was Hawaiian, that it would be accepted for my Hawaiian Registry. She said that I would need some sort of eye witness account that Grandpop Dave was Hawaiian and that his family were also Native Hawaiians.
I will have to call her and get some more information and find out exactly what I need and how to go about getting it. I will also look up Pete Kalai's phone number if the phone book and give him a call. Who knows maybe he will even be able to give me some pointers or a new direction to try.

It's Been Awhile

It's been awhile since I have posted.

That is because I have not made any progress.

I still have not made progress, however, there has been a flurry of activity and some new contacts.

1) I have been in contact with a cousin who has given me some information. I know she is a cousin because I already had her connected to my KAHANA tree, but up until now, I did not have contact with her. I do now.
We have had several conversations through email. She has been to Hawaii, as a teen and visited some KAHANA family members that live there! Up until this point I was not sure that we had family there. I finally have confirmation!
I now have addresses of a few family members in Hawaii. I am going to write letters to them. Hopefully they will be able to help me with my research. Maybe I will have family penpals I can write to on a regular basis! That would be cool!

2) I have been contacted by another person - also a KAHANA. This person had told me that all KAHANA families in the Islands are related. I do not know if she means literally related or if she is referring to what I have read about the Hawaiian concept of 'ohana' (family).
She had told me that sometime before her grandfather's time (?) that the KAHANA name was either shortened or changed. She said that the change/shortening was to HEKEKIA, and also the KAHANA names was still used. She said that KAHANA, HEKEKIA, and KAHANA HEKEKIA were all the same family.
She is going to give my information to her mother-in-law, who is the family historian, and will let me know what she finds.
I have done some preliminary research on the names that she had given to me, and although I had found some information, nothing yet to tie into my KAHANA tree.
I will keep looking.

3) In my search for the above name I came across a website:

Did Not Go Downtown Yet

I did not get a chance to go downtown to the National Archives yet. There has just been so much going on. Some day I will get down there.

What I did do was send out 10 letters. I visited the LDS Website and ran a search for KAHANA. I got back 9 results from their Ancestral Files. I click on the submitters information and copied the address. I did the same for the name KALAI - only 1 result, and the name KEAHINUI - only 1 result here too. I wrote a letter explaining what I was looking for, added a fact sheet, and a genealogy report; and sent them out in the mail.
I guess I will just have to wait and see if this yields any results.

My Mom and Dad had ran away to get married. My Grandmother, my Mom's mother, did not want them to get married. My Mom and Dad had the parish priest come and talk to her, but she still would not give her permission (at that time, in the Sate of Pennsylvania, people under the age of 21 had to have parental consent to get married). So, they made plans to run away. I believe that my Mom went to stay with her Aunt Stella who lived in Baltimore, Maryland. I do not know if Aunt Stella knew that her neice was planning to get married, and I do not know how long my Mom stayed there before she was married, but eventually my Dad met her down there.
They were married in The Church of the Sacred Heart in Baltimore on 26 November 1955.

I have decided to try something a little different.

Since I do not seem to be getting anywhere with Grandpop Dave, I decided to try to get a handle on this "Uncle Jimmy".

Family story has it that Grandpop Dave came to the US with someone called "Uncle Jimmy". Grandpop and Uncle Jimmy had stayed in touch after they arrived here. Uncle Jimmy even became Godfather to one of my Uncle Robert.

Keeping this in mind, I sent for Baptismal Records. Uncle Robert's Baptismal Certificate states that his Godfather's name is James KEAHINUI. I think this James KEAHINUI is the "Uncle Jimmy" that Grandpop came over with.

I did a search on the LDS website, and came up with the following:

Family Tree Magazine has a Hawaii Research Guide, so there are a few websites I want to visit and a few places I want to write to - I will also be asking for help with my Grandpop Dave.
I also intend to go downtown to the National Archives one day next week. I am going mainly to search passenger lists, but they also have Merchant Marine info there.

So, I have a plan to follow, for now...

A Short Hold on Research

I have not done any research for a few weeks, and it will be a few more weeks, maybe about a month, until I can get back to it. However, I do have a game plan.

I intend to go downtown to do some research. I want to go to the National Archives and check the passenger lists for 23 August 1910. I still think this is the key to why I cannot find Grandpop Dave in Hawai`i. I think this is where I will find the name change.

I also want to check the census from 1910 to 1930, for both Kahana and Anuszkiewicz-Uncort. I am hoping to find the names and birth dates of his two other wives and their children, as well as the birth dates for Grandmom Helen's family.

I was told that Grandpop Dave had lived in Riverside New Jersey after he moved here, but so far I have not been able to confirm or deny that. If I do not find him in the census (I have previously found him in the Philadelphia City Directories during the 1930s), I will obviously check New Jersey.

Everywhere I turn I am finding a DEAD END!

Does this person really exist?

I received another letter back marked "No Such Address" That makes 3 out of 12 letters I sent that were more DEAD ENDS.

I did receive a letter and genealogy report from one of the letters I send. The woman's name is Jeanne and although she is not related, it was very nice of her to write back to me. She sent me back a letter, some family group sheets with her family's information, an ancestral chart and some photos. She did say that she had some KAHANA information around and that when she finds it she will send it to me.
I am in the process of writing her back to thank her for her response. I am also sending her family group sheets of my family, a genealogy report, and photos.

I need to find out how to get a 'Delayed Birth Certificate'. Hopefully there is one on file somewhere with Grandpop Dave's name on it. I am also not sure if a Delayed Birth Certificate is the same as a 'Certificate of Hawaiian Birth'. I need to find out that also.

Trying to Fix Photo of Grandpop Dave

I have been trying to fix the only photo I have of my Grandfather.

The original I am working from is a photocopy, that is maybe 1 1/2" x 1 1/2". It was among the papers I received from the Civil Service Commission when I requested information about Grandpop Dave being a Merchant Marine. It is a mug-shot.

I have tried to restore photos before - just erasing tears, of other minor abrasions on the photo - but this one I think is going to be a little harder than that. This needs to be evened out. There appears to be a line straight down the middle of the pictures - it could possibly be the lighting - that makes the photo appear darker on the one side. I would like to even that out to make the lighting appear more natural. I was able to do this with the background already, but his face is a little more complicated.

I turned it into a sepia tone because I wanted to use it in one of my scrapbooks but I do not like the way it turned out - it is too noisey/grainy.

So, it is back to the proverbial drawing board.

Kahana Brick Wall is Getting Bigger

I am beginning to wonder if my Grandfather ever existed. Everywhere I look is another DEAD END!

I did write to about a dozen people in Hawai'i who share the Kahana surname and a few variations. I received 2 back stating that no such person existed. I have not heard from any of the others. Hopefully I will soon.

I think that the reason I am not finding anything is because of the name Kahana. I have been told that the name KAHANA is a shortened version of Grandpop Dave's name. The original name is/was quite long. I remember as a child seeing this name written on a piece of paper, it was a huge name (at least to a child) and written next to it was "later changed to Kahana". Unfortunately I do not remember the full name. The name was written by my Mother. Family story is that my Mother knew the name. Uncle Mark has asked me several times if I have seen it or if my Mother ever told me what it was. So, I am assuming that the name I saw was Grandpop Dave's full Hawaiian name.

So, going by that assumption, I think the name is the key. I need to find his full Hawaiian name to proceed. Before I find that - or to help me find it - I need to learn about Hawaiian naming customs. I have posted a query on the Hawaii-L and I have been doing Internet searches. So far there does not seem to be any special way of naming a child.

I also believe - or hope - that searching passenger lists for the Port of Philadelphia, on the date he arrived (23 August 1910) might help. I am guessing that he may have left Hawai'i using his full name, but when he entered the U.S., it may have been changed.

If that is the case, and I get the full name, then I may be able to find him in Hawai'i.

I do not know when I will be able to get in town to look for this information. Soon I hope.

Another Dead End

I heard from the Roman Catholic Church in Hawai'i -- "NO RECORDS"

I received a letter from them in the mail stating that they found no sacramental records for Grandpop Dave. However, the name KAHANA appeared 3 times:
twice as a middle name,
once as a femal child.
I called the R.C. Church Archives. I tried to get copies of them, thinking that maybe one of them could be Grandpop or maybe his sister, but she would not let me get copies because I could not prove I was related. I understand that.

She had suggested that I try the University of Hawai'i's Plantation Records. She had told me that since he was from the Big Island and the district where Kilauea is, that sugar and fishing were the two main industries in this area in the late 1800 - early 1900. She said that I might be able to find him through the Plantation Records. So I will give that a try.

She also had suggested that I check out the State Department of Hawai'i website.

Another suggestion is to write to people in the Ka'u District who share the same last name as Grandpop Dave. I have checked the Internet White Pages and have come up with:

4 Kahananui
3 Kahanaoi
I am not sure which Islands these people are from, but I am going to write to all of them.

Nettie, the woman I was talking to had tried to help me to correctly pronounce my Great-grandparents names:
My Great-grandfather's name - Lakalu, is pronounced Lah kah loo
My Great-grandmother's name - Kalauia, is pronounced Kah lau ee ah

She also helped with the pronunciation of another name I am trying to tie in with my Kahana ohana:

The District my Grandfather was born in Ka'u, is pronounced Kah oo

Well, I am going to get busy writing those letters. Hopefully I will get somewhere with this.

Update on Church Records

I heard back from St. Stanislaus - no luck. Sr. Loretta called me a few days ago and told me that she found no information about my Grandfather.

I heard from St. Pete's - I got a small gold mine! I received in the mail, 28 various Religious Certificates, including my Baptismal Certificate. The Certificates are for various family members on BOTH side of my family. I have Baptismal, Communion and Confirmation Certificates for almost all of my Mom's brothers and sisters.

I also have 2 or three more Hawaiian names to add to my searches:
1) James KEAHINUI
2) Mary KALO
3) Marie KAN?KEANO (hand written on the back of the church certificate is the statement that this name is spelled 'KANKEANO or possibly RANKEANO', but then it goes on to say that 'the information on the certificate is hard to read' and she can not fully make of the name) However, I think the name has many possibilities, such as:
KAUKEANO or maybe KAN?KEANO, but I definitely think it is a Hawaiian name.

I also heard from Holy Rosary and Sacred Heart Churches in the Ka'u District of Hawai'i. So far there are no records for Grandpop Dave. The Secretary at the Church had sent a list of names - these were in response to additional names that I had sent to her that may or may not be related. She said she will continue to look.

So, my brick wall is still intact...

Hawaii Vital Stats - No Record

I finally heard from the Hawaii Department of Health - Vital Statistics. It took almost 3 months, but they sent back a receipt and a letter. The letter stated that they did not find any record of Grandpop Dave's birth. It also stated that there were no records prior to 1896.

What to do next?

I sent a query to the Hawaii-L list asking for ideas on where to try next. Suggestions I received were to contact the Hawaiian Genealogical Society, contact the Hawaiian Historical Society, and to try Church Records.

I tried Church Records first:
1) I checked the internet to get a list of churches in the area where my Grandfather was born, as well as the number to the Roman Catholic Church in Hawaii (Diocesean Office)
2) I called the Diocesean Office. The archivist was not in and I was given a toll free number as was told to call her back on Thursday or Friday. I called Thursday - the Office was closed. I plan to try again sometime today.
3) I called the Parish that he most likely to attend (this was going by the name of the school he attended, which was also the name of a small town in the Ka'u District. The small town was Hilea). The woman I was talking to had told me to send her all of the information that I had about Grandpop Dave, along with my name, address, and phone number and she would see if she could find anything. I emailed her the information I have. That was Wednesday. I assume it will take at least a week or more, it could even take a month or more.
4) There is no sense in contacting the other Church, the phone number is the same. When I hear from the woman at the other Church, I will ask her about the phone number to the other Church.

I have not written to either the Hawaiian Genealogical Society or the Hawaiian Historical Society yet. I am planning to do that over the weekend.

I have linked (or submitted?) the KAHANA page of the Kaelin Ancestry Page (My Genealogical Website hosted by Rootsweb) to the Hawaiian Roots Website. Hopefully that will give my KAHANA ancestry some exposure.

This is my Grandfather, David KAHANA. The photo is lousy, it is a photocopy from the U.S. Civil Service Commission. I requested information about his days as a Merchant Marine, and this photo was among the papers.
David was born 26 February 1888, Ka'u District on the Island of Hawai'i, Kingdom of Hawai'i.
His parents were Lakalu (Lakali) and Kalauia (Kalaua), both of which were also born in the Kingdom of Hawai'i.
David attended the Third Public School of Hawai'i and Hilea Public School. According to the papers I received from the Civil Service Commission, Grandpop Dave did not get much past an Elementary School education.
He entered the US through the Port of Philadelphia on 23 August 1910 and remained here until his death.
Grandpop had three wives and a total of 14 children:

Waiting on KAHANA and Update on RITCHIE

I have not been able to work on this as much as I'd like. I have been very busy with work. Right now I am playing a waiting game, and after I look over some more of my notes, I will be sending for more Vital Stats.

I sent a request to the Hawai'i Department of Health - Vital Records - back in April for a copy of my Grandpop Dave's birth certificate. I am still waiting. I called them last night to check on the progress, the response I received was that they were still checking.
I asked the woman I was talking to what the possibilities were that he had one. She had asked what year he was born and what Island. After I told her she said that chances were pretty good. I hope she is right.

I also sent to the Pennsylvania Department of Health - Vital Records - for a copy of my Mom's birth certificate. I just sent out for that last week, so that will definitely take a few more weeks.

Update on RITCHIE Surname
Tony's Aunt Catherine has a copy of her Uncle Patrick's will, dated November 1953. She photocopied it and sent it to Tony's Mom - who lent it to me to scan.
Patrick J. RITCHIE was a priest in Baltimore and when he died he left his estate to his brother's descendants. This will lists the names of the three brothers:
John C. RITCHIE
George RITCHIE
Aloysius J. RITCHIE
It also lists the names of all of their children - 22 in all - who I am not going to name here. Some of the women are listed with their married names, but not their husband's first names.

I have very few photos of my KAHANA relatives and ancestors, and what little I do have are not in very good condition.
My Mom was one of 14 children (I believe), but Grandpop Dave was married three times (? - all were Common Law marriages). My Mom was the oldest girl from his last marriage, which was to Helen ANUSZKIEWICZ - UNCORT. In the photos below, my Uncle Vince (Vincent J. KAHANA, b. 6 July 1943 - d. 22 January 1998) was also the son of Helen and David.
Frank KAKANA (Francis KAHANA, b. 18 May 1920 - d. September 1985) was the son of Bertha and David. I have not been able to find Bertha's surname as of yet.

I have plans to post my Genealogy Report at a later date.

We have quite a few people in our family interested in photography as a hobby - and one who is considering a career in photography.

My Mom-Mom, Marie Katharine PAUL KAELIN was one of them. My Dad use to tell me about how she would always have her camera with her at family functions and outings. She is probably responsible for most of the photos of my Dad when he was a kid.

Then we have my Dad who is definitely responsible for photos of us as children. He also has photos from weddings he shot in his early 20's, most of these weddings were his friends. He also has photos of various places around the US that he visited.

Most of my photos are the usual photos of my children and family get togethers. I have an interest in landscapes. I love the beauty of nature and what better way to capture it than in a photograph.
Lately, I have become interested in taking photos in cemeteries. The older cemeteries are wondeful to photograph. There is so much history and believe it or not - fine art work. The statues and old monuments found in the turn of the century cemeteries are beautiful works of art.

Besides the three of us show below, we have other photographers in the family:
My Mother - she always had a camera on her. We have lots of pictures of us as we were going into our teens. A lot of these were of us and our friends just being kids. She did not like the formal, static photos of professional photographers, so she took photos of us at play and at parties.

My Daughter - she accompanies me on a lot of my photo outings, and although she pretty much photograph the same things that I do, she brings a different perspective to the scene. She also takes her camera with her to a lot of her school dances and class trips. I think she is definitely a better photographer than I am. I love her work. She took the photo of me below.

My Niece - she want to be a professional photographer. I have not seen any of her work but from what I understand, she lives with her camera.

My Mpther-in-Law - We gave her a camera for Christmas or something a few years ago, and she loved it. She takes pictures at every family function there is, and she thoroughly enjoys it.

Mysterious Kahana Relatives?

Mysterious and Elusive.
My Hawaiian side has been just that, mysterious and elusive. They are hard to trace. I have so few photos, and the faces in the photos are so unfamiliar to me.

The little girl Denise, in the photos below, I believe may be a KALAI. I remember when I was little visiting the KALAI's, and if I remember correctly some of the children's names were Denise, Doreen and Danny. I don't remember if there were any more children, but I do remember these three.

The little girl - holding the doll - in one of the other photos, is most likely a KAHANA. I was told she was my Mother, but I don't think she is. The smile is all wrong. My Mother's smile showed more of her teeth. I think she may be one of my Mom's sisters.

I have no idea who the adults are in the last two pictures, however, they do appear to be related, or at the very least Hawaiian.

Family Graves - Holy Sepulchre Cemetery

Holy Sepulchre Cemetery is just outside of Philadelphia in Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County. It is owned/maintained by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. It was established in 1895 and is another example of the beautifully landscaped cemeteries here in Philadelphia. It too has the large ornate statues and headstones that most of the older Victorian type cemeteries have.

My husband's Paternal side of the family are buried here, his Father and Grandparent's. His father and his father's first wife, Anna SALVATICO, as well as, their son are buried in this cemetery. In the same grave with them is Anna's parents, James and Adeline.
My husband's Grandparent's are also buried in this cemetery in a separate plot. In this grave is Felix and Anna Faustina FICOCCILLI MAIALETTI and one of their four sons, Domenic.

I had no idea that I had family in this cemetery until I was contacted by Linda PAUL. Linda is married to a descendant of, Henry PAUL, one of the brothers of my Great-grandfather, John PAUL. There are two PAUL Graves here. One is the grave of John J. PAUL, son of Henry PAUL and Elizabeth TROST PAUL.
The other PAUL Grave has the remains of Henry and Elizabeth, mentioned above, as well as:

Regina MULLEN PAUL - wife of John J. PAUL
Catherine *LEINS PAUL - wife of Harry G. PAUL

Family Graves - Holy Redeemer Cemetery

Holy Redeemer Cemetery is located on Richmond St. in the Bridesburg Neighborhood of The City of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Cemetery was established in 1886 by St. Peter's R.C. Church (at 5th St. & Girard Ave.) and is still active. It is a beautiful old cemetery, full of very elaborate headstones and monuments. It has a tree lined central driveway and the first few sections are scattered with trees.
The newer section, which is in the rear of the cemetery is more modern with the typical headstones we see today and not as many trees.
The cemetery is well maintained.

Almost my entire Paternal side of the family is buried here. Below I show the photos of the graves I have seen so far. There are more that do not have headstones, and some that I have not been able to locate. There are more LEINS graves, at least one other PAUL grave, FISHERs, BOWERs and more...

Paul Family Grave. There are actually 13 people buried at this gravesite. When my Gandmother died in 1974, we had a sonogram done of this site. The sonogram showed that the bottom layer of graves had deteriorated. So we buried her with her here with her parents and brothers. I have records of 7 people who are buried here: Matthias PAUL, John PAUL, John PAUL (My Great-grandfather), Marie Katharine PAUL KAELIN (My Grandmother), Mary PAUL (My Great-grandmother), Frederick J. PAUL, and Andrew PAUL. I believe the rest of the people buried here and: Harry PAUL, Francis PAUL, Joseph PAUL, and Edward PAUL. - all of which dies as children prior to 1900.

Kaelin Family Grave. My Grandfather, Great-grandparents and Great-aunt and Great-uncle. Brabara T. KAELIN's maiden name was FOX, she was the daughter of Carl FOX (or FUCHS) and Elizabeth HOFFMAN. She was the 2nd wife of Joseph Martin KAELIN. Frances SHANNON's maiden name was KAELIN. She was the daughter of Joseph Martin KAELIN and his first wife Salome TRINKLER.

FOX Family Grave. Catherine FOX' maiden name is PAUL. She is the daughter of John Adam PAUL and Genevive HAHN. The maiden name of Mary C. is still unknown to me. Mary C. was married to Adam J. FOX.

Holy Cross Cemetery

I went to Holy Cross in the fall of 2004. I wanted to find the grave of my Grandfather, David KAHANA, and also the grave of my Great-grandfather, Stanislav (Stanley) *ANUSZKIEWICZ UNCORT.

Holy Cross is just outside the City of Philadelphia to the southwest in Delaware County.

I was surprised to find that my Uncle Stan was buried with his parents. I was disappointed that Grandmom's name does not yet appear on the stone. She has been gone for three years now.

The grave of my Great-grandfather, Stanislav, was very disappointing - he lies in an unmarked grave with his son, Stanley. Also buried in this grave is Stanislav's brother-in-law, Joseph SIGMOND. A follow-up phone call to the cemetery yielded the following:

Age: 55
Buried: 13 April 1939

Stanley UNCORT, Jr.
Age: 85
Buried: 12 June 1995

The cemetery has no record of my Great-grandmother, Alexandria (Alice) SIGMOND ANUSZKIEWICZ UNCORT. I guess I will have to write to the Catholic Cemeteries Office dowtown to see if they could tell me what cemetery she is in.

*NOTE - The name ANUSZKIEWICZ UNCORT is two separate names. ANUSZKIEWICZ is the name that Stanislav was born with. When he and his wife Alexandria came to the US, the name was eventually changed to UNCORT.

Although I set this blog up for all my genealogical research, I will be concentrating mainly on my Hawaiian Ancestry.

I have been doing my family history research for nearly 16 years. I have my Paternal lines both traced back to their countries of origin:
KAELIN in Einsiedeln, Switzerland
PAUL in Unterleichtersbach, Bavaria, Germany

I am just beginning to trace my Maternal lines. These lines are from the Ka'u District on the Island of Hawai'i and Poland.

I am just starting out with this blog. I still need to organize my thoughts, photos and other research material before I post them.
